Biden Airstrike Cost the Lives of Innocent Victims and Potentially Millions in U.S. Taxpayer Money

President Joe Biden is adding another failed execution on his list of subpar military acts in Afghanistan. Back in August, a Kabul airstrike targeted and killed a friendly, innocent interpreter (Zemerai Ahmadi) and nine members of his family. All of these innocent lives were taken and instead of any real measure of good faith, the Department of Defense (DOD) plans on using taxpayer money to cover it up. The taxpayers weren’t the ones to tragically take the lives of 10 innocent victims, yet they are the ones expected to clean up the mess.

If you weren’t aware of what happened, back on August 29th, 2021, an American drone targeted and destroyed a van outside of a home in Kabul, Afghanistan. The Biden administration claimed that the target was an ISIS-K terrorist leader who conducted an attack that killed 182 people (including 13 U.S. troops) at Kabul Airport just three days prior. However, due to a lack of preparation which led to no actual intel, they ended up targeting an innocent civilian. It took weeks before the Biden administration was ready to own up to the fact it killed the wrong people. They finally admitted it in mid-September.

Now that they have done wrong, they must do right. However, their idea of “doing right” is compensating the surviving family members of Zemarai Ahmadi. Who may we add, was an individual who worked for a U.S. charity for fourteen years as an engineer. This innocent man not only was taken too soon, but he was a charitable man. DOD official Dr. Colin Kahl has met the family and offered them condolence payments to buy them off, but no one knows for how much. However, the family stated that they didn’t even want the money, instead they wanted to relocate to America and away from the Taliban (which now are stronger after America’s rushed departure).

There is no easy way to deal with the mistake (in fact this mistake should’ve never happened especially with this level of technology). However, it opens up a can of worms that could lead to some more issues. American drone strikes have accidentally killed civilians in the past. Does this mean now their families will get money? Will they be granted asylum in America? How much will this cost? What national security concerns are there? All of these questions are sure to be in the forefront of everyone’s minds when dealing with this issue.
